Thailand is the only Southeast Asian country to avoid European colonization. Originally, Thailand was known as Siam, which was used until the 1950s. Tourism is a big part of the economy, and Thailand is one of the favourite destinations of tourists from all over the world. The country is safe, and 93% of the population is Buddhist. Visitors head for beautiful nature, exotic beaches, beautiful monuments and for sex tourism too. The main sites to visit include the capital, Bangkok, the seaside town of Pattaya, Chiang Mai or tropical islands of Phuket, Ko Chang and Krabi. Nature lovers can visit national parks, such as Erawan, Phu Kradung or Sai Yok. In the north of the country is the second-largest city of Thailand, which is very popular – Chiang Mai. It is full of beautiful monuments and, at the same time, it is the gateway to the exotic Thai jungle. The country is also a popular location for digital nomads who come here from Europe or the US to live and work remotely.
