The Amazon Rainforest is an enormous green area, spreading over nine countries in the South America. This rainforest is largely unexplored by humans, with unknown animal species as well as Indian tribes that do not have any contact with our civilization. This is why we simply couldn’t miss out on seeing the rainforest on our visit to Peru.
For our trip to Peru, we chose to use the services of the company Jacamar Lodge Expedition, which arranges accommodation and tours to the Amazonia. They offer accommodation including meals right in the rainforest, as well as tours to the surrounding area. We have spent exactly 3 days/2 nights in the rainforest and it was the perfect length of stay. We recommend agreeing on everything right in the office and paying for the whole package including all the activities right then and there. If you do that, you won’t have to worry about anything later and will be able to simply enjoy the real jungle atmosphere. We were actually very surprised at how relaxing and calming could a stay in the rainforest be.
How to get to Amazonia
If you’re travelling through Peru, your gateway to the green jungle is the town Iquitos. Because there is no road leading to the town, you can only reach it by plane or a boat (which takes around 3-4 days). We chose the faster option – flying from Lima straight to Iquitos. Our driver from the Jacamar Lodge Expedition picked us up at the airport and took is direct to their office. Once we were there, we agreed on all the details and then the very next day we were able to set out for the jungle. First, we took the auto rickshaw to the port and from there rode on a boat along the Amazon River to face the new adventures that the rainforest had in stock for us.
What to take with you if you’re visiting the rainforest
Prepare for travelling through the jungle. The humidity in the forest is very high and it rains quite often (also during the dry season), so most of your things will get damp and there will be no chance of drying them unless the sun is shining. It’s necessary to be prepared for that so it’s important to take waterproof clothing, ideally covering your legs and arms. Make sure you don’t forget an insect repellent! The long sleeves will serve as a protection against the ever-present mosquitos. You can spray yourself head to toe with repellent, but you still won’t be able to avoid the occasional bite. The mosquitoes are supposedly attracted to black, so if you choose colourful clothes you might lessen the number of bites your skin has to endure. You should also take durable hiking shoes, flip-flops, swimsuit, hat and sunglasses. You will be often travelling by boat in the Amazonia, so a waterproof case for your phone or camera is also appropriate.
Accommodation and meals with the Jacamar Lodge Expedition
Accommodation in the Jacamar Lodge is truly very romantic; everything is made from natural materials. Small huts that stand on high poles are connected by paths that come together in the common room. Every little hut is super cosy and offers perfect privacy. Inside you’ll find a bed as well as your own bathroom with running water and a toilet. Electricity is provided by a small generator for a few hours a day, so you’ll be able to charge your camera batteries. Each hut comes with a private socket.
The rainforest is the most beautiful during the night hours. When all the lights go dark and the generator goes silent, the nightlife in the jungle wakes up. The never-ending concert of every possible kind of insect and other animals creates the unique atmosphere that is so wonderful to fall asleep to.
The meals are served in the common room in a form of a buffet. The chefs are very willing to accommodate any special requirements, such as any special diet. Typically, meat, rice, vegetables and fruits are served and there is also a bar with both alcoholic and soft drinks. Drinking water is available throughout the day. Sometimes, the chefs will surprise you and prepare something special, such as caiman meat. The food in the jungle is truly delicious – we enjoyed every single bite.
